Multiflora
roses are one of the more popular types of exotic roses available. These
roses were introduced to the eastern part of America from Japan in the
mid-1800s. It took a few years, but in the 1930s, the U.S. Soil Conservation
Service began to promote it as a good use for “erosion control.”
It was also used as a barrier to keep livestock in their own areas.
More recently, highway builders have found that these exotic roses
are able to be used on highway medians to serve as crash barriers. Also,
they have been found to be able to reduce the glare from automobile
headlights.
Although there are advantages to having these exotic roses, they were
soon found to be not all good. Because they grow so tenaciously, it
was found to be an item that disrupted cattle grazing on unplowed lands.
Because of this, there are many states that have classified these exotic
roses as a noxious weed, including Iowa, Ohio, West Virginia, and New
Jersey.
Despite this, the multiflora rose still is not a bad thing to have
in your garden or home. But it is important to remember that exotic
roses need to be cared for and watched over on a consistent basis.
